who have been trained to walk with hurting
people in their time of need. Each
hurting person is invited to meet regularly

compassionately while maintaining
confidentiality. Stephen Ministers are
not counselors or therapists but are
Christian caregivers uniquely equipped to
support others. This
ministry is offered without charge.
Persons (including friends and relatives of
Covenant members) seeking support from a Stephen Minister

Breaking News From Your Pastor!
May 12, 2009
Dear Church Family,
The summer season is upon us! The temperature
in the last few days has hit 95 with a dash of humidity. I'm
not saying it's hot outside, but yesterday I saw two palm
trees fighting over a dog! Our northern church family has
flown away for a few months, and we pray that God keeps all
of us safe during our travels this summer. For those who are
up north, please stay in touch and check the new sermons
every week. Just go to our website,
click on
Sermons, and then
hit the sermon you wish to hear. When you click on News,
you can read our bulletin.
As of today, our new roof has been completed. We had 188
people who contributed to the roof project, and again I want
to say thank you for your generosity. Our children will not
have to wear a raincoat when they go to the Wiggle Room!
Last Sunday, our middle schoolers - Kaitlyn Schorle, Lauren
Castner, and Dortea Childress - held a bake sale in the
courtyard and raised $641 for the Soup Kitchen. It's amazing
what a little faith can do when God is in it!
This Sunday, May 17, is our Spring Potluck Luncheon
following the morning worship service. Please bring your
favorite dish and join us! If you haven't signed up, feel
free to reply to this email and let us know how many in your
family would like to attend.
Our Treasurer, Barry Metzger, has informed me that we have a
new way to handle stock transfers. If you would like to give
Covenant a gift in stock, please contact Barry at the church
office.
Dawn Castner is working diligently to prepare our Vacation
Bible School. The dates are June 22-26. If you would like to
help with arts, snacks, skits, teaching or anything, please
sign up at the Connection Station in the courtyard or
contact Dawn at the church. Our goal this year is 150
children. If you know any children in your neighborhood,
take a moment to pray for them and then invite them to our
VBS.
Last week, I met with the Committee on Ministry, which
wanted an update on Covenant one year after the split. I
told them that nothing much has happened, except we took in
90 new members, increased our choir to 50, watched our
attendance explode to 800 on Easter and witnessed an
explosion of joy on Sunday mornings. I told them how
thrilled Jaye J. and I are to play a small part in
rebuilding this great church. It takes all of us working
together to make it happen. Thanks be to God!
Yours in
Christ,
Dan
Middle Schoolers Raised Over $640
Thanks to our generous congregation, the bake sale organized
by our middle schoolers was a tremendous success!
Sarah Owen of Community Cooperative Ministries (the umbrella
organization for the Soup Kitchen) is helping
direct the funds to provide food for community children through
the back-pack program or the mobile food pantry. Thanks
to everyone who partnered with the middle schoolers to help
provide food for children in our
community!
You're Invited to Sing With the Summer Choir!
We want to invite members to join us for summer choir; we
promise great fellowship and fun singing!
The choir will sing through July and will take off August and Labor
Day Sunday. They will rehearse on Thursday nights at 7:00
PM through June. In July, they'll rehearse Sundays at 9:20 AM. No audition is required. If you have questions, please leave
your name and phone number in the church office (334-8937).

and friends of Mrs. Allen. The award will be
announced at the spring scholarship convocation at the

Soup Kitchen:
An Exciting New
Development in Our Fight to Feed the Hungry in
Our Area
In the past, we have asked for food
donations; however, we have since found out that
the Soup Kitchen and the Harry Chapin Food Bank
can provide more food with our monetary
donations than we can provide with our food
donations. When Sarah Owen, director of CCMI,
recently spoke with our children during the
Childrens Time, she said that as little as $2
could feed a family for four days. Covenants
Local Mission Committee would like to request
that, instead of food, we give monetary
donations and let the Food Banks do the
purchasing. A red donation box is located in the
narthex for your contributions. Any amount is
appreciated! The amount collected will be
divided between the two agencies on a monthly
basis.

If anyone is interested in being part of the
committee to build a float for the Edison Parade in 2010,

support groups, and the Bible studies will prove
stimulating for our lives. Day or evening

Luke's Gospel for the Poor. We all long for
release, wholeness, and freedom. We desire to

Christ loves us, we want to share that joy with

Join the Stephen Ministry Team!
The Stephen
Ministers of Covenant have served our congregation for
thirteen years. These caring ministers are equipped to
connect hurting persons with God during difficult
moments in life. In November, we will train a new group
of Stephen Ministers under the leadership of Linda
Sinclair. We urge you to consider whether God might be
leading you to join this compassionate ministry. The
training gives you tools and support, while God gives
you the inspiration. Since life nudges us in ways we
dont quite expect, your spiritual gifts may fit well
with this caring program. For more information, please
drop a pew card in the offering plate or contact a
Stephen Leader: David Robinson, Anne Wills, Linda
